Biography

Dr Qiang Hua is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield. His research spans antennas and RF/microwave engineering, with a strong focus on AI-enabled methodologies for efficient antenna design and optimization, as well as microwave antenna/sensor solutions for healthcare, detection, and sustainability applications. Prior to his current role, he was a Lecturer at Huddersfield and a Research Assistant at Liverpool John Moores University, where he worked on microwave antenna and sensor design for the Bill and Melinda Gates Medical Foundation. He received his PhD in RF/Microwave Engineering from the University of Liverpool, and holds an MSc (Merit) in Digital Signal Processing from the University of Manchester, alongside a First-Class Honours BEng in Electronic and Communication Engineering (University of Liverpool / Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University). His publication record includes articles in leading IEEE venues (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation and IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters) and related journals, reflecting contributions to advanced antenna design, surrogate/ML-assisted optimization, and application-driven metasurface and device concepts. He has also led and contributed to funded research, including Principal Investigator support for a microwave-based non-destructive liquid identification device for food safety applications, and has engaged with industry- and impact-oriented calls. Dr Hua is a reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, and Textile Research Journal, and he teaches across circuits, electronics, communications, instrumentation and measurement, electromagnetics, antennas, mathematics, and project management.
