Biography

Richard joined the university in 2013 having worked in online, radio, TV and print journalism. He was variously a journalist, producer and broadcaster for Sky News, BBC Radio 5 live and Xfm among others, and established the Saddleworth News hyperlocal journalism site. He previously taught social media and online journalism skills at the University of Leeds. Richard has an MA in International Politics from the University of Manchester, and a BA in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Leeds.

He was a fellow at the 2017 Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute, held at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, part of Arizona State University. Since 2017 he has been one of the judges of the RTS Yorkshire Awards.

Richard is the leader of the first year module Journalism Technologies and the third year module Journalism Innovation.

He is also the Recruitment Tutor for the Department of Media, Journalism and Film, meaning he often goes to schools and colleges to hold workshops with A-Level and BTEC students, as well as holding taster days for them on campus.
