Biography

Richard is the Subject Area Leader for Media, Journalism, Film and Drama.

He joined the university in 2013 having worked in online, radio, TV and print journalism. He was variously a journalist, producer and broadcaster for Sky News, BBC Radio 5 live and Xfm among many others, and established the award-winning Saddleworth News hyperlocal journalism site.

His PhD on court reporting in the UK's local media was completed part-time through Cardiff University. His research has been referenced in a series of recent Parliamentary inquiries, as well as the Cairncross Review on the future of high-quality journalism.

Richard previously taught social media and online journalism skills at the University of Leeds. He has an MA in International Politics from the University of Manchester, and a BA in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Leeds.

Richard leads and teaches on a wide variety of modules, focusing on areas such as digital technologies, journalism skills and media law. He was previously the course leader for BA (Hons) Journalism and BA (Hons) Music Journalism.

He was a fellow at the 2017 Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute, held at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, part of Arizona State University. Since 2017 he has been one of the judges of the Royal Television Society Awards.

Richard was previously Chair of the Admissions and Marketing Group for the former School of Music, Humanities and Media, and also acted as the Recruitment Tutor for Media, Journalism and Film, working with local schools and colleges on visits, taster days and other activities.
