Personal profile

Biography

Richard joined the university in 2013 having worked in online, radio, TV and print journalism. He was variously a journalist, producer and broadcaster for Sky News, BBC Radio 5 live and Xfm among many others, and established the Saddleworth News hyperlocal journalism site.

His PhD on court reporting in the UK's local media is due for completion through Cardiff University in 2019. His preliminary findings were referenced in the Cairncross Review into the future of high-quality journalism. Richard previously taught social media and online journalism skills at the University of Leeds. He has an MA in International Politics from the University of Manchester, and a BA in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Leeds.

Richard is the course leader for BA (Hons) Journalism and BA (Hons) Music Journalism. He is the leader of the first year module Technology and the third year modules Journalism Innovation and Investigative Journalism.

He was a fellow at the 2017 Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute, held at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, part of Arizona State University. Since 2017 he has been one of the judges of the RTS Yorkshire Awards.

Richard is also the Recruitment Tutor for the Department of Media, Journalism and Film, meaning he often goes to schools and colleges to hold workshops with A-Level and BTEC students, as well as holding taster days for them on campus.
