Personal profile

Biography

My specialist expertise in learning disability nursing enables nursing students to influence the health and  lives of people with learning disabilities; ensuring 100% employability.

I directly contribute to the professional education of over 600 nursing and health care students,  teaching mainly on the pre-registration nursing course. Here I ensure that learning disability issues are represented to all fields of nursing, while providing the in-depth perspective for learning disability nursing students as well.

I have a BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology, gained prior to nurse education and this underpins my interest in humanistic and person-centred approaches to supporting people with learning disabilities.  I began my career as a learning disability nurse (RNLD) in Calderdale in 1999, holding several posts with a charitable company, St Ann's Community services where I gained experience working with people who have complex needs or behavioural support needs.   A move to  the Wakefield Community Team for Learning Disabilities as a Community Nurse in 2002 enabled me to I further develop my nursing skills in this often challenging but rewarding role.  I seized the opportunity to share my knowledge and skills with students in 2006 as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield.  My teaching aim is to produce healthcare professionals who change lives for the better.
