Biography

Simon Fletcher is a Principal Enterprise Fellow working within the Engineering Control and Machine Performance group (ECMPG), part of the Centre for Precision Technologies.  With more than 20years’ experience in machine tool accuracy improvement including error identification, avoidance and compensation, he has helped establish the groups international reputation for research into machine tool precision.

Simon is currently working on collaborative research with industry primarily involving detailed geometric and thermal performance assessments for precision manufacturers. This type of work has evolved and now includes machine tool and machining process simulation. This follows the co-creation of new Modular Machine and Process simulator software as part of a recently completed InnovateUK project. The combination of machine tool metrology and simulation work is now beign used as part of a EPSRC RiR with the High Value Manufacturing CATAPULT, specifically working on traceable on-machine inspection on large machine tools in collaboration with the Nuclear AMRC.

As co-investigator for the University EPSRC Future Advanced Metrology Hub, Dr Fletcher has also been working on new sensor technologies for embedded measurement of machine tool structural distortion. This activity has recently expaneded into cost effective sensorisation for machine condition assessment, creating new low cost MEMS based solutions with edge computing as part of a recently completed InnovateUK project with MTT (lead partner) on 'Metrology and digital manufacturing for servitisation of manufacturing machines'.

Dr Fletcher has been module leader for an MSc module on dimensional measurement for more than 10 year, with many final year projects being supervised. He is also Director of Studies for 6PhDs students and co-supervises a numberof others in the Engineering Control and Machine performance group.
