Biography
Dr Hasan is a Reader in Pharmacy Practice and Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Course lead at the University of Huddersfield, UK. He is an active researcher and qualified Academic Pharmacist with 20 years of experience in Pharmacy Practice teaching and research both in hospital and academia. He joined the University of Huddersfield in September 2017. His expertise includes quantitative synthesis, evidence synthesis, pharmacoepidemiology, clinical pharmacy practice research, public health, and chronic disease epidemiology. He is particularly interested in quantitative and qualitative evidence synthesis and regularly publishes in peer-reviewed journals. His clinical knowledge and expertise in clinical pharmacy practice and research help students understand medications' clinical and therapeutic uses. For example, Dr Hasan and his colleagues contributed significantly to the evidence synthesis in COVID-19 to highlight the safe use of medicines amid the pandemic and fight the irrational use of medicines for COVID-19 with an evidence-based approach. During COVID-19, he has also appeared in the media to discuss the safe use of various medications for treating and managing COVID-19. Dr Hasan also held a conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, Australia, between 2018 and 2024.
Before joining Huddersfield in 2017, he was a Senior Lecturer at International Medical University, teaching pharmacy students various pharmacy practices, clinical pharmacies, and pharmacy practice research. Dr Hasan has taught a range of clinical pharmacy practice and research-related topics at the University level: University of Strathclyde MPharm in Malaysia, International Medical University, University of Queensland, Australia, and University of Newcastle, Australia. In 2011, he was awarded International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and UQ Centennial Scholarship for PhD by the University of Queensland, Australia. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding international students to undertake an MPhil or PhD in areas of research strength at Australian universities to gain experience with leading Australian researchers. While at the University of Queensland, he taught pharmacy students and completed a postdoc research project. His interest lies in research addressing unanswered questions in patient care related to medication and patient safety. He validated various widely used questionnaires and published them in leading clinical journals. In addition, he implemented innovative strategies for medication reviews in aged care homes and community pharmacy settings.
Dr Hasan was associated with Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi, a Joint Commission International (JCI) and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited hospital, from December 2004 to July 2006 and served in various roles such as trainee pharmacist, outpatient pharmacist, drug information pharmacist, and in-patient pharmacist.
Dr Hasan possesses a strong track record in producing high-quality scientific and educational research output and has produced more than 350 research publications (Scopus records) and has been among the Top Authors by scholarly output and citations in the UK (Scival Elsevier). Dr Hasan won many competitive, merit-based International Research Awards, including ISPOR Excellent Research Article Award 2020-21. BMJ Best Practice and WHO has cited our research on COVID-19 and have received comprehensive coverage in print and electronic media.
He regularly performs editorial duties and reviews articles for leading clinical and medical journals. He is actively supervising (undergraduate and postgraduate) research students, reviewing research grant applications (e.g., Diabetes UK), and conducting PhD thesis examinations (national and international). He is an Associate Editor of ‘Journal of Medical Virology, Q1 journal. He served as the Guest Editor for various scientific journals (Pharmaceuticals, Frontiers in Pharmacology). He also contributed to the Journal of Pharmaceutical Policy and Practice as a section editor and associate editor. He is also an Editorial Board Member at Drugs and Therapy Perspectives and the British Journal of Pharmacy. In addition, he regularly reviews articles for several journals in Medicine, Pharmacy, and Public Health (e.g., Journal of American College of Cardiology, The Lancet Haematology, BMJ Open).
Dr Hasan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE), a Scientist at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (SRPharmS), a member of the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM), and a member of Sindh Pharmacy Council.
Dr Hasan has a Pharmacy degree (BPharm) from the University of Karachi, a Master of Pharmacy (Clinical Pharmacy) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, and a PhD in quality use of medicine and pharmacoepidemiology from the University of Queensland, Australia.
Research Expertise and Interests
Dr Hasan is particularly interested in clinical pharmacy research, pharmacoepidemiology, chronic disease epidemiology and disease burden, and evidence synthesis and publishes various aspects of the safe use of medicines. For collaboration in the following areas, please feel free to contact him.
COVID-19 Evidence Synthesis
Dr Hasan is one of the most prolific authors synthesising evidence-based articles dealing with COVID-19. He is leading the evidence synthesis group at Huddersfield for better use of medicines during CoViD-19 and has contributed significantly by publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Between March 2020 and December 2022, we produced more than 100 articles, including evidence-based reviews, commentaries on published studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and original studies — with a cumulative impact factor (of the journals that published our work) of more than 190. Over two-thirds of our articles have been featured in Q1 and Q2 journals and ranked in the top half of scientific publications. Some of his COVID-19 contributions include the mortality benefits of steroids and anticoagulants, the benefits of using inhalable corticosteroids in asthma and COPD patients amid the pandemic, the safe use of drugs for diabetes, CVS, etc. BMJ Best Practice and WHO has cited our research on COVID-19 and have received comprehensive coverage in print and electronic media.
Quantitative synthesis
Dr Hasan utilises quantitative synthesis in understanding the use of various interventions to improve the use of medications, safety aspects of medications, establish the efficacy of the medications, etc. Our meta-analysis of randomised control trials offers clinicians quality evidence to facilitate clinical decision-making about a particular intervention or treatment. He regularly synthesises evidence using a meta-analysis approach in his research and transfers this skill to his students.
Chronic disease epidemiology and disease burden
Dr Hasan significantly contributes to chronic disease epidemiology to help understand the determinants of chronic disease in populations and justifies intervening most effectively to reduce morbidity and mortality due to chronic diseases.
Dr Hasan developed his interest in chronic disease epidemiology during his PhD at the School of Population Health, the University of Queensland, Australia. He explored the link between mental health and diabetes using data from The Mater Misericordiae Mothers' Hospital-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy (MUSP). MUSP is one of only a handful of studies worldwide to examine whether maternal pregnancy, early childhood, and puberty are critical periods for the development of chronic problems. Dr Hasan produced many articles discussing the link between mental health and diabetes (as the first and corresponding author).
Global burden of disease (GBD) is a comprehensive, collaborative research to produce data, analyse, interpret, and document mortality and disability across countries, time, age, and sex. It incorporates the prevalence of a disease or risk factor and the relative harm it causes. Dr Hasan contributes to GBD as an author on a topic relevant to his research: chronic disease epidemiology.
Scale development and validation
Scale development is widely used in clinical and health sciences research to capture data on a particular topic. This process includes developing the questions, pre-testing the questions, administering the survey, item reduction, and testing the dimensions, reliability, and validity of the scale
