Personal profile

Research Expertise and Interests

My research expertise and interests are in international trade law and maritime law. I am particularly interested in studying law on Carriage of Goods by Sea and Sale of Goods with a comparative approach from a law and economics perspective.

Tianyi joined the School of Law in March 2018 after being awarded her PhD without corrections by Bangor University. She gained her LLM in International Business Law from the University of Manchester in 2008, and her LLB from Qingdao University (China) in 2005.

Her research expertise covers international carriage of goods by sea and international sales law. She is particularly interested in researching various transport documents and their functions in maritime trade. Her PhD thesis targets four crucial legal issues regarding the transfer of rights through the bill of lading in maritime trade, viz., the transfer of contractual right to sue, the transfer of proprietary interests in goods, the transfer of the right of control, and the theoretical rationales for the transfer of rights in question. It adopts a comparative approach, together with a law and economics perspective, analysing how these issues have been settled in English law, American Law and the Rotterdam Rules and answering the question of how current Chinese law should be reformed to regulate the transfer of bills of lading in shipping and trading practice. Some of her research findings have been published in international peer-reviewed Journals such as Journal of Maritime Law and Commerce and Journal of the British Insurance Law Association.

Before starting her PhD, Tianyi passed the Bar Exam of P.R. China and practised as a commercial lawyer. She worked as a legal counsel in a Chinese multinational consumer electronics and home appliances company (Haier Group) from 2009, dealing with legal affairs concerning international trade and corporate governance. Tianyi started her teaching activities at Bangor University whilst doing her PhD. She worked as a teaching assistant and gained the experience of teaching the module of Carriage of Goods by Sea and the module of International Sales Law.
