Addressing intersex epistemic injustice in healthcare communication through visual art

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Intersex people born with ambiguous genitalia are often operated on in infancy and medical histories are hidden from them. Intersex people face barriers to healthcare communication rooted in stigma and duplicitous medical practices. Others, such as those with Klinefelter syndrome, are denied needed care because of a lack of medical intersex awareness. I aim to survey participants about healthcare communications followed by an art workshop where paintings will be produced accompanied by additional qualitative data. Paintings will be exhibited at a stakeholder workshop at the University and findings will be published in a journal article.
