Project Details

Description

This project will assess the feasibility of using non-specialised image acquisition systems (e.g., mobile phone cameras) to capture images of railway wheels and determine the key dimensions using a novel algorithm proposed in the research work. The dimensional data captured by the algorithm can be used to advise, plan and decided on future maintenance actions, but also health and safety critical limits for the operation of freight trains. The overall goal is to shift the heavy reliance on manual inspection techniques to a more robust automated techniques which can then be directly linked to asset management systems.
