On-Rotor Sensing (ORS) for the detection of safety critical faults on rail freight wagons

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Numerous high-profile derailments of freight wagons have been caused by sliding wheels derailing at switches and crossings, often resulting in millions of pounds worth of damage, lengthy line closures and significant environment damage. This trial of Self-Powered On-Rotor Sensing devices will allow sliding wheels, wheel-flats and failing axle-box bearings to be detected, and the train halted, before they can cause a serious accident. The trial is being performed with the support of the RSSB (Rail Safety and Standards Board), DB Cargo and Digital Transit an SME which will be providing the sensor technology.
