Securing a software and end user licence agreement to enable a practice-based project to evaluate the Huddersfield Application for Mental Health Assessment (HAMHA) when assessing the mental health needs and risks for children and young people (CYP).

A UK-wide project, funded by the RCN Foundation and led by the University of Huddersfield in collaboration with healthcare organisations across the UK was completed in December 2022 to support non-mental health staff assess and manage (CYP) . Non-Mental-Health Nurses (Non-MHNs), Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), academics and stakeholders were consulted on development of the assessment app, which was conceptualized as a decision support tool for NMHNs and AHPs for defensible decision making. The app known as the HAMHA: Huddersfield App for Mental Health Assessment was constructed and positively evaluated over a 12 month period. After recent review and a successful practice-based validation in one NHS team, we now want to host and share the Beta 2.1 version of the app more widely to gather data to improve quality and functionality ahead of possible commercialisation.

An IAA previously funded a HAMHA proof of concept project in 2024. However, this was only partially complete as we were unable to secure licence agreement and terms of conditions of use of the HAMHA to share with prospective test sites. This was due to unforeseen staffing issues arising from Uni restructure.

We are applying for funding to secure 1) a software licence to enable the use of the app by NHS Trusts or other organisations, and 2) an End User Licence Agreement (EULA) that sets out the key terms and limitations for individuals using the app. The UoH legal team has stated that they cannot provide these agreements, although they have outlined what needs to be included from the University’s perspective.

The cost of preparing the full licence agreement is estimated at around £2,000 + VAT, and the EULA at around £1,500 + VAT. There may be additional costs depending on any amendments required after the first draft.

Once full licence agreement secured we can then make use of funding opportunities offered by the RCN Foundation and other funders to evaluate the HAMHA in practice.
