Self-powered vibration sensing for condition monitoring of train wheel-axle bearings

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The safe running of railway trains depends highly on the reliability of wheels and axle bearings. Many serious railway train accidents are caused by derailment due to wheel or axle bearing defects, which usually cause significant economic losses, undesirable environmental pollution, and even casualties.
This project aims to develop an on-board condition monitoring system for wheel-axle bearings. By analysing the vibration acceleration collected by the self-powered wireless sensor at the axle end, early defects of wheels and axle bearings will be detected and warned in time before they fail, thereby reducing railway accidents and ensuring transportation safety.
