Tram-Train Best-Practice Guide

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Tram-Trains are light-rail vehicles that can operate on heavy rail infrastructure (i.e. Network Rail) and enable suburban rail services to be extended into town centres seamlessly, offering higher frequency services and better connectivity to city centre activity sites. This has been demonstrated through a successful trial operating between Sheffield and Rotherham, however, uptake in other urban centres has been slow due to the economic and technical barriers. A Best-Practice Guide will address these barriers, promoting the development of future Tram-Train schemes by reducing the uncertainty over the challenges such schemes present and minimising the cost and time of delivery.
