Abstract

This chapter explores the history of the original negatives of the Cottingley fairies photographs. It provides an account of the taking of the photographs and the passage of the negative through various hands. It explains the processes by which the negatives were altered and 'improved' at the behest of Edward L. Gardner. It also traces the whereabouts of the original (now missing, presumed lost) negatives over time through extant correspondence and documentary sources.
