Abstract

This paper analysed the modern history of Chinese design and the background of social changes; it discussed the long term disjointed situation between design theory and design practice. Based on the study of China’s contemporary wedding ceremonies, the paper analyses the process of the wedding and the arts and crafts designed to be used in contemporary weddings in China. By exploring the design that inherited local tradition and the changes led by the external influence over the last decade, the paper argues that good design solutions are based on people's needs rather than simply taking nationalization or internationalization as a standard measurement.
