Abstract
The overarching questions of interest in this chapter are not new: what are the properties of, and the factors that restrict the availability of, embedded verb movement? I take a new approach by examining lesser-studied instances of embedded verb movement alongside well-established cases, using this enlarged dataset to better understand the characteristics and interpretation of embedded verb movement across a subset of Germanic languages. In doing this, I aim to further refine our understanding of the syntax of embedded V-to-C constructions in so-called “limited” and “residual” V2 systems and the extent to which the same mechanisms are at play.
