Abstract
This paper investigates the conflicting approaches that focus on the future of New Delhi. Embroiled in controversy since its conception as a new Imperial Capital, this urban precinct now represents the complexity of India’s and Delhi’s colonial past, while simultaneously coping with unparalleled challenges of urban development and housing. Representations made by both conservation and urban development lobbies have had a significant impact on the identity and value of New Delhi in its larger context. The objective of this investigation is to critically appraise the notions of the value of New Delhi as heritage as opposed to its real-estate and developmental value.
