Abstract

An increasingly diverse student body combined with pressures to demonstrate excellence in teaching and improve results presents challenges for lecturers. Active learning techniques have attracted interest and discussion amongst educationalists. This chapter investigates the challenges and gives a practical guide to techniques that have been used effectively in a large lecture situation with first year students.
