Announcement of doctoral theses: Title of the thesis: Looked after children with learning disabilities: experience of participation in care decisions

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

A 100-word synopsis of the thesis: This thesis explores how looked after children with learning disabilities experience participation in decisions about their care. Using creative, child-centred interviews and focus groups with social workers, it reveals a wide variation in participatory experiences, shaped by individual, professional, and systemic factors. The study highlights the need for relational and creative approaches tailored to children’s individual needs, supported by policy and cultural shifts in social work. It concludes that these children have both the desire and ability to be more involved in decision-making and offers recommendations to strengthen practice and better uphold their rights through more consistent, inclusive, and meaningful participation.
