Abstract

Pyrotechnic compositions containing zirconium and potassium perchlorate are used in the electrical initiatory systems found on missiles, launch vehicles, spacecraft, and other aerospace and defence platforms. Thermal analysis provides a way of examining how formulation changes influence the properties of pyrotechnic compositions.

The potential of the technique of sample controlled DSC (SC‐DSC), using a heat‐flux DSC system, in the study of metal‐oxidant pyrotechnic systems is discussed with reference to the zirconium‐potassium perchloratenitrocellulose pyrotechnic system. Measurements have also been carried out on the pyrotechnic binder nitrocellulose and the possibility of using the SC‐DSC system to study the fusion of inorganic pyrotechnic oxidants has been investigated using magnesium nitrate hexahydrate as a model compound.
