Abstract

This paper presents an investigative study of using pressure pulsations from a reciprocating compressor for fault detection and condition monitoring adopting wavelet packet transform and envelope analysis. The pulsation signals from the compressor usually consist of resonance frequencies; theses frequencies within the system become detrimental if their amplitudes are significantly high due to system configuration or component deterioration (fault). In this study, pulsation signals from the compressor are divided into bands for easier analysis and each band is de-noised by applying a hard threshold based on standard deviation of the signal. In addition, envelope analysis of the de-noised band signals is computed and a statistical parameter (root mean square) is used to determine the best band for classification. Finally, entropy against kurtosis plot is used to classify the investigated faults. The results show pressure pulsations from the reciprocating compressor as an effective condition monitoring method for system resonance identification and valve fault detection.
