Abstract

Because of the steady increase in incidence of malignant melanomas it has been realised that new tools are required to support early diagnosis. The main purpose of this paper is the creation of a knowledge base that could be used as a diagnostic tool for melanoma case images. Specifically, topic map (TM) standard, a semantic web technology, is applied in order to manage dermoscopic images and associated clinical data and medical findings. In the following subsection the potential benefits of encoding information using topic map technology are outlined and design and realization of the TM-based knowledge repository is presented.
