Abstract
In this chapter, we explore the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in three challenging domains: urban traffic control and mobility, postconsumer textile sorting, and power distribution networks. Each case study highlights the potential of AI to address complex problems and contribute to positive societal outcomes. We then take the opportunity to discuss the challenges and lessons learned from these case studies, emphasizing the importance of domain expertise, data availability, and explainability in successful AI implementations.
