Abstract

Currently there is growing interest in time dependent media, materials whose constitutive relations change with time. Most models assume the permittivity and permeability are constant. This approach works if both permittivity and permeability are real. However to model lossy materials it is natural to consider complex constitutive relations. In this paper we demonstrate with a simple example that such a model is unphysical in a time dependent media. Furthermore we derive the correct boundary conditions necessary for wave propagation in a time dependent media.
