Abstract

Chatter as well as flexural deformation frequently occurring in long slender workpieces turning process, reduces the dynamic stability and geometric accuracy of the operation. This study aims to analyze the vibration characterisitcs of a compliant workpiece in straight turning so as to provide a prelude for online condition monitoring and control of chatter issues in machining of flexible workpieces. Considering the effect of the time-varying cutting positions due to tool movement, the chatter stability of the cutting system along the cutting path is constructed, and the critical stiffness expression for chatter onset prediction is deduced. After that, machining experiments were carried out to observe the vibration transition mechanism of the compliant workpiece during turning operations. Combining the theoretical analysis and the experimental measurements, the vibration characteristics of the compliant workpiece during stable and unstable cutting are compared and summarized. The present study provides an in-depth understanding of the dynamic behavior of flexible rods in turning operations.
