Abstract
Jeremy Double provides guidance about the use of the process intensification (PI) technology to realize its significant benefits for some processes. The expected business advantage need to be significantly more than any perceived business or technological risks for such a technology to be used successfully. A successful approach to using PI appropriately needs to involve a multi-disciplinary team in which development chemists, physical chemists, and chemical engineers work together from the initiation of process development. Jeremy Double states that appropriate targets for PI can be identified by understanding each process in terms of its fundamental science and its business drivers. A systematic approach is necessary to help business managers, chemists, and engineers work together to understand the whole process and identify appropriate technologies, including PI solutions.
