Abstract

Disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) are two practices designed to tackle vulnerabilities to disasters. It is commonly recognised that there are several key similarities between the two and the linkages between them have been highlighted throughout recent global agendas. Although there is wide recognition that a cohesive approach to CCA and DRR would be beneficial in generating sustainable actions, there are many factors that hinder successful integration. Based on findings of a global analysis conducted as part of a research project entitled ESPREssO (Enhancing Synergies for disaster PRevention in the EurOpean Union), this chapter reviews the critical factors that hinder the integration of CCA and DRR with a global focus. Findings reveal chaotic institutional arrangements, unlinked stakeholder activities, lack of political will, haphazard nature of funding, interrupted knowledge transfer as the critical factors that hinder the integration of CCA and DRR around the globe. This book chapter shows the existing challenges in order to provide a starting point for instigating DRR-CCA integration.
