Abstract

A new non-traditional signal processing approach to damage detection is presented. The proposed approach consists of using two new variables (monitoring features) simultaneously: the real and imaginary components of the Fourier transform taking into account covariance between these variables. Analytical comparison of the monitoring effectiveness of the proposed approach and three traditional approaches is performed. Numerical modeling and experimental results dealing with the fatigue crack and damping diagnostics in aircraft engine blades based on the proposed approach are presented. It is shown that the proposed approach offers an essential improvement in effectiveness of damage detection in comparison to the traditional approaches.
