Abstract
Photographs documenting the Leeds poster campaign of artist Rasheed Araeen and the story of a Nigerian-British citizen named David Oluwale, from his origins in Nigeria to his death in Leeds, UK, in 1969.
London-based artist Rasheed Araeen was one of the first artists to respond to the death of David Oluwale. He produced For Oluwale (1972-5) in a series of responses to the reports in the national press of the trial of Ellerker and Kitching. The original work is currently on display at The Baltic in Gateshead. The work responds to the death of David Oluwale, a British-Nigerian who drowned in the River Aire in 18th April 1969 after being systematically harassed by members of the Leeds City Police force.
