Abstract

The design process of a novel electro-mechanically tunable reflectarray antenna at millimetre-wave frequencies that realises 1-D beam scan coverage is presented. The process includes designing a tunable reflection phase shifting unit cell and adjusting the unit cell to produce a tuneable reflectarray surface. The tuning is achieved via the mechanical displacement of the ground plane, which alters the cavity height of the system to produce the required phase shift. Simulations have been carried out using CST Microwave Studio to evaluate the reflection response and the tunability of the proposed reflectarray. Simulations demonstrate a low reflection losses operation and the potentiality of 17° beam steering at 44 GHz.
