Abstract

Africa’s digital transformation is reshaping its economic and social landscapes, driven by rapid internet penetration, a youthful demographic, and increasing adoption of digital services. Within this dynamic environment, Lion multinational enterprises (MNEs) encompassing leading African conglomerates and global technology leaders are playing a pivotal role in catalysing technological and innovative advancements across key sectors, including telecommunications, financial services, energy, and consumer goods. This chapter examines how Lion MNEs strategically harness disruptive innovation, leapfrogging traditional infrastructure constraints through mobile-first and adaptable solutions. By analysing major initiatives such as connectivity expansion, digital skills development, and financial inclusion platforms the chapter highlights the tangible socio-economic impacts, including job creation, poverty reduction, and service delivery improvement. It also explores the complex interplay between commercial imperatives and developmental objectives, showing how Lion MNEs integrate sustainability, ESG principles, and public-private partnerships into their strategies. Africa’s evolving digital ecosystem is thus positioned not only as a beneficiary of global innovation but also as a testing ground for scalable, inclusive, and transformative digital solutions with global relevance.
