Abstract

Pressure ulcers (PUs) are a chronic wound commonly caused by pressure, friction and shear. Support surfaces, such as pressure-relieving mattresses, are a recommended strategy for their treatment and management. However, it remains unclear if pressure-relieving mattresses have a positive impact on PU prevention. This review aimed to explore the effectiveness of pressure-reliving mattresses in PU prevention. A search of the published literature between 2018-2023 was undertaken using Embase and MEDLINE and 11 records were identified. Two studies meeting the inclusion criteria were included in the review and focused on two main themes: PU prevention and management, and cost effectiveness. Variations in study methodologies and patient populations investigated mean it remains inconclusive regarding the most effective type of support surface for PU prevention and management, patient comfort, or cost effectiveness. Future research should focus on a standardised approach to measuring patient outcomes. With an aging and frail population, it is also important to explore the overall cost of such mattresses to the healthcare system, including their use in a domestic setting.
