Abstract
Schools operate within highly complex and competitive environments, with an emphasis on prescribed attainment outcomes which can limit the development of independent learners. This article by Hazel Bryan and Chris Carpenter, with Graham Bissett, describes an action enquiry project in a primary school. It aims to enable and enrich pupil learners whilst still meeting the demands of external accountability.
