Abstract

As the World Wide Web expands to include not only virtual services and human users, but also physical devices through the Web of Things and diverse forms of artificial intelligence (AI), there is a growing need to revisit the core design principles for Web-based multi-agent systems (MAS). This chapter presents an approach for engineering hypermedia multi-agent systems (hMAS), addressing the design of MAS environments, agents, and possible actions on the Web. Rooted in the Web's architectural principles, the hMAS concept defines a uniform hypermedia abstraction layer for dynamic, scalable, and open MAS, where agents discover, reason about, and exploit new action possibilities through signifiers. At the same time, hMAS lays the conceptual and technical foundations for interactions of established and emerging types of intelligence, such as humans, cognitive agents, and generative AI on the Web of Things and on the broader Web.
