Abstract

Rolling elements of bearings spin and revolve simultaneously during operation. For each revolution period, there is a spin period during which a defected rolling element passes through the load zone center and causes two largest amplitude impact transients (LAIT). LAIT segments of each rolling element are separated according to the bearing kinematics. The transient waveform in the LAIT segments is enhanced with band-pass filtering, demodulation and low-pass filtering. An enhanced signature named envelope ensemble average (EEA) is obtained by ensemble averaging of the enhanced LAIT segments for each rolling element. Validation results of the EEA signatures with simulation signals and experimental signals show that EEA signatures are very sensitive to element defects and robust to rotational speed fluctuation and rolling element slippage. Besides, the method does not need a tachometer and the computational cost is low.
