Ernest Berk: Piraparana

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Chapter › peer-review

Abstract

This chapter presents the first analysis of Ernest Berk’s electronic music soundtrack to Piraparana (1965) – a documentary about the Tukano-speaking Makuna culture in South America by Brian Moser and Donald Tayler and filmed by Dutch filmmaker Niels Halbertsma. The chapter first situates Piraparana and its novel soundtrack within documentary and film practice of the period. It then examines Berk’s aesthetic approach to electronic music composition and how he became involved in the film. The final part of the chapter provides an analysis of the soundtrack, illustrating Berk’s thematic and harmonic thinking as well as his re-use of material from other works. The chapter demonstrates how Berk’s novel electronic score is in keeping with and expands the traditional music of the Makuna culture rather than merely mimicking or sampling it.
