Abstract
This paper reviews the application of the Masonry Quality Index (MQI) within the scientific literature. Designed and proposed first in Italy [1,2], and then internationally [3-5], the MQI has been used by researchers to evaluate structural behavior and estimate mechanical properties of historic masonry and to support assessment and retrofit strategies. Its application covers range of geographic regions and masonry typologies, including monuments and archaeological sites, reflecting both the original Italian calibration and subsequent adaptations to different masonry traditions. The MQI has been employed in approaches ranging from qualitative structural assessments to more advanced implementations incorporating experimental data, non-destructive testing techniques, and recalibrated analytical charts. This review examines examples of MQI applications in recent years (2017-2026), illustrates the flexibility of MQI applications and provides insight into its practical relevance and analytical effectiveness in seismic and structural assessment studies.
