Evaluation of geotextiles on embankment displacement under seismic load

Abstract

In recent years, Geotextile has been widely used to increase the seismic stability level of a small and medium size of earth embankments, which can be investigated as a kind of typical slope. An embankment, with and without Geotextile reinforcement, were modeled on soft Ramsar clay. The efficiency of Geotextile on embankment displacement was evaluated and compared with the finite element analysis under two different load modes (own weight, seismic). Various parameters such as water level, number of geotextile layers, and Geotextile's stiffness were investigated and effects of these parameters on maximum displacement of embankment were determined by using of PLAXIS 2D. Generally, maximum displacement changes have direct impact on water level changes. The high-axial strength Geotextile and number of Geotextile layers can reduce the maximum displacement of clay embankment particularly in sesmic load mode.
