Abstract
This paper discusses the need for thorough assessment of individuals presenting with faecal incontinence. A description of the burden of faecal incontinence is presented. The role of the health care practitioner is vital in providing advice, support and guidance for sufferers and health care providers that will help to improve quality of life. Skin integrity should be protected through effective cleansing and prevention of friction and shear and continence products used as appropriate. Regular evaluation of the interventions should be undertaken and the effectiveness recorded.
