Abstract

The 92nd Textiles Institute World Conference (TIWC) 3rd -6th July 2023 was hosted by Conference Chairman Prof Parik Goswami at the University of Huddersfield. The conference them was ‘Sustainability of the Textile and Fashion supply chain-Transitioning to Zero Carbon and Zero waste’. The conference aimed to demonstrate how ‘academic- industry-government dialogues could benefit the industry and create a meaningful roadmap towards achieving zero carbon ambitions by 2050’ (textiles, 2023. p. 32).

As part of the conference programme Wednesday 5th July 2023 saw the hosting of a fashion show. This performance, a fashion staff collaboration aligned to the conferences aims and themes. Production Designer Kathryn Brennand, Choreographer Claire Evans and Backstage Manager Debbie Allsop drew on a sustainable planning approach when preparing the performance. Students had been encouraged to produced garments using dead stock, consider minimal fabric waste approaches and the repurposing of existing products. The performance saw staging and lighting reduce to lower the carbon footprint model walked bare foot with minimal make up. Music coordinator Guy McKelvey used music that complemented the performances slow fashion feel.
