Abstract
This article aims to discuss formalist approaches to the attempt to psychologicalize natural settings in cinema or, in other words, the attempt to make landscapes transcend their usual function as narrative backdrops. By “formalist” we mean that such an approach to visual representation is, at the same time, intrinsically aggressive and experimental (one aspect implying the other), especially if we compare this approach to more realistic forms of expression. Instead of human characters portrayed within an authentic nature, as in the typical western of classic Hollywood cinema, it is the topography of the landscape that becomes a reflection of a particular human consciousness.
