Guangzhou Image Triennial 2025: Ecology of Sensitivity

In an algorithm-dominated visual age, Guangzhou Image Triennial 2025 explores the potential of an “expanded photography” to reconnect humans with reality. Guangzhou Image Triennial 2025 stands as a manifesto for an Ecology of Sensitivity, reshaping how we perceive the world. Yan Wang Preston’s lightboxes series Winter – Seed Capsules documents her act of burning all the seed capsules from one Rhododendron ponticum bush which is classified as a non-native invasive species in the UK. Drawing from Chinese poetry, painting, and the concept of eternal time, Wang Preston frames the seed as a symbol of life and death, fire and rebirth, control and surrender. Inspired by the motif Tian Yuan Di Fang — the circle as sky, the square as earth — the resulting images reflect nature’s own balance of contradictions as well as our struggles to manage nature.
