Abstract

Zero Emission Small Vehicle with Integrated High Temperature Battery and Fuel Cell (Zestful) is investigating the best way to use a hybrid energy source to extend the driving range of a 2.5t London taxi. Two 3kW PEM fuel cell prototypes, developed by MES-DEA of Switzerland were selected. The fuel cell stack has separate forced air flow systems for cooling and reaction air supply, and a microprocessor that manages air cooling and airflow fans, steering electronics for membrane hydration. The battery crucial to meet mass and volume constraints, ensures the vehicle operates with nameplate voltage and current limits, with a minimum voltage limit dictating actual energy utilization, operating time and range.
