Health & Work

Anthony Burton, Gordon Waddell

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

Work is an important part of life. And research shows that work is good for physical and mental health. We now have good evidence that returning to work as soon as possible actually helps recovery. It is the best way to avoid long-term sickness.

Most sickness absence is due to:
Mental health conditions such as 'stress' or depression.
Muscle and joint conditions such as back pain or whiplash.
Heart and chest conditions such as blood pressure or asthma.

This leaflet is about helping employees get back to health and work. They will learn what they need to do, and what to expect from health care and the workplace. They will get practical advice on overcoming obstacles to recovery and work.
