Abstract

Heaviness in Metal Music Production: A Practical Guide translates the 'Heaviness in Metal Music Production' (HiMMP) research project into an applied resource for practitioners. Based on a comparative study of eight internationally recognised metal producers working from the same multitrack session, it organises insights on heaviness around core production decisions: philosophy (Naturalistic vs Hyperreal), arrangement and performance, drum and guitar engineering, spatial design, and loudness and dynamics.

The guide is aimed at metal producers, mix engineers, and advanced home recordists who want to refine their understanding of heaviness in contemporary metal mixes. It is designed for use in the studio, in teaching, and in self-directed learning, and can be read on its own or in conjunction with the project’s dataset, videos, and academic publications at www.himmp.net.

As an interactive eBook that contains audio players and other media, open the guide (index.html) in a web browser to read and listen.
