Abstract

As the set and costume designer for 'Hidden', Lara devised an immersive, interactive promenade performance.

Hidden was developed in collaboration with mental health charity 42nd street. Through a series of workshops with young carers in Manchester we devised an immersive, interactive performance staged across three floors of The Horsfall building. The aim was to engage our audience in an experience that would educate them on what it means to be a young carer. The design responded to the young carers’ desires on how they wanted the audience to feel during specific moments of the performance.

The audience were invited to make choices which lead to multiple outcomes. The top floor housed a final twist: a group of young carers observing the responses of the audience throughout the experience now had the opportunity to question them directly on their decisions; every performance was therefore unique. In addition, you were able to listen live to the young carers’ commentary on the audience participation via an online app.
