How the actions of fictional characters influence copycat offenders

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Discussions of the impact of violent media on the behaviours of offenders have covered a considerable range of offences, including shooting offences, firesetting, and homicides. However, the topic of copycat offences based on media influences is one that has not received a large amount of attention within literature. As such, a study was devised to explore the impact that violent fictional media has on copycat offenders. A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted to explore commonalities amongst copycat offenders whose offences were inspired by fictional media. 30 offenders were identified who were responsible for 39 offences in total. Additionally, 34 victims were also identified. The results found that half of the offenders displayed excessive violence during their offences. Additionally, 12 of the 30 offenders displayed similarities in their behaviour to those of fictional characters. Whilst a considerable number of the offenders included displayed similar behaviours to fictional characters, 6 of the 30 offenders deviated from the M.O. of fictional characters. During the thematic analysis potential triggers for the offences perpetrated were also explored, with familial disputes prior to offences, drug use and mental illness being the most prevalent triggers identified. The implications of these findings, alongside directions for future research, are discussed.
