Abstract

This chapter concerns the design of hybrid machine tools to implement hybrid machining technology. It starts with a review of the state-of-art commercial hybrid machine tools. It then proposes design principles for hybrid machine tool and discusses general design considerations. A design case study for a newly developed six-axis hybrid machine tool is also included in this chapter to explain the dynamic design method for machine structure, motional stage, control system, and on-machine metrology system. It concludes with future development needs to accelerate the technological development and industrial implementation of hybrid machine tools.
