Imbalanced loading of bulk wagons - report (COF-UOH-47)

Research output: Book/ReportCommissioned reportpeer-review

Abstract

A previous study (the T1119 project), commissioned by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) and delivered by the Institute of Railway Research (IRR) at the University of Huddersfield, investigated the influence of offset loading of container wagons on derailment resistance on twisted track. The relationship between derailment propensity and wagon imbalance found from that study has been used to inform changes to the relevant Railway Group Standard (GMRT2141) and the management of eccentrically loaded containers. This project was established to mirror the investigations of T1119 for vehicle ‘types’ (characterised by suspension type and length) and the load conditions representative of the GB bulk traffic fleet.
