The paper by Duan and her colleagues reports research findings from a project funded by the European Commission. On the basis of case studies and surveys, the authors explored methods of knowledge transfer designed to bridge the gaps between Europe and China in the extent of Internet adoption in fresh-produce supply chains. This action-oriented research project revealed barriers to Internet adoption in China in this industry and employed a transnational knowledge transfer approach to reduce them. In a wider context, the paper analyses the main features of this knowledge transfer from a knowledge management perspective, including, specifically, the principal activities, the key actors and the transfer stages involved. Finally, Ringwald examines the recent perception that China is a lucrative location for higher education partnerships (many UK institutions have established collaborative relationships with universities in China). Recognizing the crucial importance of the transfer of management knowledge that enables partnerships to function and thrive, Ringwald considers Chinese and UK perceptions of, and attitudes to, interpersonal and interorganizational relationships, and questions whether the right conditions exist for knowledge transfer to be effective. She finds that knowledge will be most effectively transferred when trust and social capital have been developed and when communication is open and unambiguous. However, the research indicates that there are cultural barriers to be overcome before the conditions for effective knowledge transfer can be developed.",
