Interfering with Free Speech and the Fate of Turkey: The Criminal Defamation Case of Ekrem İmamoğlu

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This article deals with the judgment of İstanbul’s 7th Criminal Court of First Instance (Asian circuit) regarding the (criminal) defamation accusations against mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. It is argued that the İstanbul court blatantly ignored reasonable grounds to acquit İmamoğlu and that an eventual conviction may result in an illegitimate interference with freedom of expression.
